Whether you’re looking for festive activities to keep the kids entertained or would prefer a quiet walk surrounded by the stunning countryside views, there are plenty of activities to see and do for families, couples, groups of friends, and single travellers. Continue reading to discover our top 5 recommendations to do in Derbyshire this winter.

1) Merica Marina

Situated outside the city of Derby, a 24 acre wildfire lake surrounded by 50 acres of beautiful landscapes, Mercia Marina Village & Park provides much enjoyment for boaters, lodge owners, shoppers, diners, and sightseers, and more. From countryside walks, relaxing boat tours, and breath-taking cycle routes to retailers, boutiques and galleries, the Mercia Marina has truly something for everyone this winter. Only 25 minutes away from The Lion Hotel, we believe it’s worth the visit.

If you’re looking for some festive fun, visit Santa’s Grotto in Merica Marina every weekend from December 3rd through to the 17th. Create unforgettable festive memories and enjoy a truly magical experience for your little ones when they meet Santa and his Elf. If you’re on his good list, maybe receive a present from the jolly man himself! This is a free entry event for all the family and free car parking is also available.

2) Denby Pottery Village

For a family fun day for all ages to enjoy, visit the Denby Pottery Village this Christmas. Browse the artisan food and craft markets, decorate your own wreath and ceramic gifts at their workshops, join Santa with a festive Afternoon Tea, or grab a festive Christmas Eve Breakfast with Mrs Claus in the Bourne’s Coffee Shop & Bistro, this event is packed with story times, festive games with Santa’s Elves, and a Christmas goodie bag for every child. Along with a personalised visit to meet Santa, they can hand-pick their own special gift from Santa’s Workshop and take part in fun festive games in the Denby Gardens.

For parents and adults, relax and enjoy a Christmas Lunch with home cooked food made from fresh and local ingredients. You can do this after visiting the markets and the Denby Gift Shop for some Christmas gift shopping.

3) Chatsworth House

You may have already heard of Chatsworth House. The well known stately home is located among 737 hectares of beautiful landscaped gardens and Derbyshire countryside. The estate stands proudly on the east bank of the River Derwent between both the Derwent and Wye valleys. Home to the Cavendish family since 1549, both Chatsworth House and Chatsworth Gardens are open to the public throughout the year.

This winter, experience their Norbic Christmas theme and attend their range of Christmas events. Take a festive stroll down an enchanting illuminated trail at dusk, explore a tour of Chatsworth House, bring your little ones to discover their farmyard, meet some furry friends, and keep them entertained in their playground. Visitors can also shop in their award winning farm shop or dine in their restaurant and cafe.

4) Bolsover Castle

If you’re looking for outdoor group activities with an interest in English history, stop by Bolsover Castle in Chesterfield. Just a 30 minute drive from the Lion Hotel. There’s a variety of activities to do, be transported back in time as you wander the historically decorated rooms, take an audio tour to dive deep in the castle’s history or visit the spectacular riding school.

Listen to tales from costumed storytellers, roam the ruined Terrace Range, and take in the countryside scenery during the Wall Walk. Families can also enjoy the exhibition in the stables, and kids can let their imaginations run wild in the castle-themed play area.

5) Pickford’s House

For museum enthusiasts, Pickford’s House is part of the Derby Museums. This is a unique museum in the Georgian home of the Enlightenment architect, Joseph Pickford. Filled with historic archives and interactive activities, each room has been beautifully restored for the display of exhibitions. This Christmas, Pickford’s House is hosting a range of exhibitions of entertainment and activities for all the family.
