No matter which way you slice it, September 5th marks a momentous day. Yes, that’s right. It’s National Cheese Pizza day! And that means cheesy puns (sorry!) and a slice or three at one of the best pizza restaurants in Derby.
National Cheese Pizza Day 2019
We’re not entirely sure of the origins of National Cheese Pizza Day – but it’s our kind of celebration. In the UK, pizza is now the most popular food purchased in restaurants. And the 2nd most popular item bought in supermarkets for dinner!
On those statistics alone we think it’s fair to say that pizza is one of the most universally loved foods in the UK and, probably, across the world!
While many of us probably think that pizza originated in Italy, it actually has a surprising history. Way back in Ancient Greece, the Greeks covered their bread with oils, herbs and cheese. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Because of this many believe that this was the beginning of pizza as we know it now!
Over the years, the dish has evolved. And while in Italy it used to be only mozzarella cheese that topped their Neapolitan Flatbread, weird and wonderful toppings are now enjoyed globally by many. And we’re not talking about ham and pineapple! We’re talking grapes, bananas, lobster, baked beans, mashed potatoes and strawberries (hopefully not all on the same pizza).

We don’t know if you’ve noticed, but here at The Lion Hotel, we’re passionate about pizza. In fact, we love it so much that we decided we wanted to bring an authentic pizza-eating experience to our customers, and so we decided to have a stone baked pizza oven installed at our pizza restaurant in Derby!

That being said, if you’re feeling more traditional and want an authentic Neapolitan experience, then you’ll enjoy our Margarita. All of these yummy dishes can also be enjoyed with our stone baked pizza garlic bread (with cheese, naturally), and if you still have room you can even go the whole hog and grab yourself our Nutella pizza topped with strawberries or strawberries.
